Introduction to Guitar Workshop
with Yusif Al-Refae
Want to learn how to play the guitar?
In this workshop, you’ll learn the names of open guitar strings, be able to read chord symbols and tablature (essential for continued learning), and will start to learn the basic foundational chord structures and scale patterns that will allow you to continue learning guitar at the intermediate level.
You’ll also learn to differentiate between types of guitars, the names of the parts of the guitar, and be able to tune the guitar and maintain it by changing the strings.
The workshop will balance theory and knowledge with practical application and give equal weight to each.
We’ll cover:
- What is a Guitar?
- Guitar anatomy
- Music theory
- Reading TAB
- Rhythmic pattern
- Names of strings
- How to tune a guitar
- Play simple chords
- How to use a pick
- Intro. to single note playing
Workshop requirements: Students are required to bring a guitar to class. For beginners, we recommend a guitar with as thin and as narrow a neck as possible. Electric guitars are more suitable for beginners to learn on because they are easier to play than bulky classical guitars, especially for beginners. If you’d like to bring an acoustic guitar, we recommend getting a 3/4 size guitar, steel string 6, such as the following models, available locally at music shops:
- Yamaha Junior FG-Junior JR1 Adawliah, Shuwaikh Industrial (at CAP Contemporary Art Platform) KD 49
- Fender Acoustics Model: California Series Strat Acoustic at Adawliah, Shuwaikh Industrial (at CAP Contemporary Art Platform) KD 128
